Keeping your Goldendoodle safe around the house

Sometimes Goldendoodles are too smart for their own good! They are not only cute, but curious!
They are the spice of life! But even too much spice can cause us harm.

Over the holidays, I realized how easy it was for my dogs to grab little things such as the exchange christmas light bulbs that come in the plastic bag wrappers we usually find in the boxes of light ornaments for our Christmas trees. I had been taking down the holiday tree and a packet had come out of the box and fallen onto the floor.

I thought I had picked up all of the tiny bulbs that had spilled out of the little plastic wrap. On to pulling off the other ornaments and so on.

About fifteen minutes later I noticed my dog laying under the living room table munching away on something he really seem to be far too quiet. I asked my husband to find out what he was up to. Upon checking, we discovered he had already eaten half an exchange Christmas light bulb. It is just that fast and just that easy for your Goldendoodle to ingest something sharp that can cut into his or her digestive system which can unfortunately turn fatal. Thankfully, we were able to catch our dog in the process and collect all of the pieces so that none were ingested.

We like to think that our Goldendoodles have common sense....but they do not. They are animals who have small brains and they can not think with reason, like us human beings. What our Goldendoodle lacks in brain power, they make up for in beauty. But still, we must do all that we can to keep them safe. Especially when it comes to objects that are small enough to fit into their mouths.

A Goldendoodle can change your life forever. They are just that good of a dog. It would be a tragedy to lose them over something that can be prevented. When we are in a rush, we tend to just sit our small items to the side and in my case, I have a tendency to believe that my dogs can't reach a certain point on my counter. I have been proven wrong time and time again. They are just that smart! So taking the time to ensure that you place your small items in a safe location and out of reach is very important.

Make it a routine and a habit when it comes to putting away small toys, if you have children. If you can help your children understand that your Goldendoodle can become seriously harmed if he or she swallows one of your children's small toys, your child is more apt at putting away their toys after playing with them. Rule of thumb for your Goldendoodle and toys that belong to your children. If the toy is small enough to fit into the mouth of your Goldendoodle....then it is possible for your Goldendoodle to swallow the toy.

Certain foods can be toxic to your Goldendoodle around the holidays and so can certain plants. Especially Pointsettas. Garland as well as Tinsel can be deadly. Taking out the trash is a necessary habit especially if your Goldendoodle is snoopy.... like my dogs! We have to constantly tell our dog to get out of the kitchen!

She will deliberately go into the kitchen and open the trash can .... looking for some table scraps! Her nose leads her the way. We have now resorted to using a baby gate that separates the living room and our dining area. Better to be safe than sorry!

You will be surprised at the dexterity and acrobatics that your Goldendoodle has when it comes to reaching a scrumptious treat. If you have left treats on the kitchen counter, you may want to ensure that the container is made of plastic. Should your Goldendoodle jump off and knock the container to the floor, there won't be broken glass all over the floor to clean up afterward.

In order to keep your Goldendoodle safe.......you will need to think ahead. Safe proof your home for your Goldendoodle, just as you would for your young child. Since 1999, I have been inordinately fortunate to have been given the all to rare experience of unconditional love, by my Goldendoodles. I want them around for as long as possible.
